Having your own blog/website can be a bit intimidating for newbies. Some have notions that you need technical skills in order to start. Others are scared to try out blogging as a source of income because of the perception that you need a big amount of money. These are not true.

Skills Required

There are no special skills required for you to have a website. You don’t need to study in IT schools. As long as you know how to type using your keyboard, read and navigate the internet, I’m sure you can make your own blog/website. If you are reading this article, I am sure you are highly capable.

Cost

Contrary to the usual assumption, setting up your own blog is inexpensive. There are only two things that you need to purchase: domain name and web hosting.

Web Hosting

Web host is your home on the internet. It stores all the pages on your website and makes them available to computers connected to the internet. Note: Don’t ask me for detailed explanation because I can’t. I don’t have IT background. Point is: you can make your own website even if you don’t understand the technical aspects. Trust me, it’s not that important.

In order to make decent earnings online, you need enough amount of traffic. Online income would depend on the number of visitors to your blog or website. If you are an Adsense publisher, you need visitors to earn. Obviously, you need proven strategies on how to get traffic to your blog fast.

Now, let’s go to how I drive traffic to my website. There are several SIMPLE ways by the way. Let me guide you through.

1. I made the site as simple as possible.

- I used a reader-friendly font (Arial), black text in a white background. Before my site was too cluttered, so I got rid of unnecessary widgets on my sidebar. I also limited the number of ads in my website.

2. I have chosen an SEO friendly Word Press Theme.

- Search engine optimization or SEO is the most important factor to consider if you want to have visitors in your blog/website.

- Your goal is to land your blog post or article on the top search engine results or at least on the first page of Google search results WITHOUT PAYING.

3. I write articles with the targeted keywords in mind.

- In order to rank in the search engine results, I use the intended keywords in the Title and in the body of my blog post.

- Make sure to use the “keyword” that you want to rank on Google

4. I take advantage of the power of social media.

- Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Google+1 are powerful tools to get your articles and blog posts out.

- With this in mind, I install Twitter, Facebook and Google+1 buttons on each articles.

- One retweet (RT) could reach 100s to thousands followers on Twitter. Each share/like on Facebook can get your blog out to your Facebook friends. (Check Manila Twitter Services if you want to increase your Twitter followers fast.)

Many have realized that blogging is a good source of income, either part-time or full-time. Even business owners have recognized the importance of having a blog to further promote their products and services on the internet.

However, newbies asked me a hundred times or more: Can I make enough money using free blogging platforms.

Yes, you can but I don’t fully recommend.

Advantages of Free Blogs

1. You don’t have to pay anything. It’s absolutely free.

2. Anyone can make their blogs using free platforms like blogger or wordpress.com. As long as you have an email address you can sign-up.

Just go to blogger.com or wordpress.com and specify username/blogname.

For example:

ronaldredito.wordpress.com

After choosing the username, you are done. You can now start blogging.

However, if you will notice ronaldredito.wordpress.com is now suspended.

Disadvantages of Free Blogs

1. Because it is free, you don’t have full control over your blog. It can easily be suspended or taken down anytime without due notice just like what happened to Ronaldredito.wordpress.com You should read their Terms of Services http://en.wordpress.com/tos/

2. The free wordpress.com platform does not permit advertising, therefore you cannot monetize your blog (which is supposed to be your goal: to make money online).

3. You have limited control on customization of your blog. Unlike the self-hosted/paid blogs, you can customize the way you want your blog/website to look.

On free blog platforms, you cannot install helpful plugins which can help boost search engine optimization that can lead to more traffic/visitors to your site.

4. No one wants to advertise with blogs using FREE platforms. (If the owner cannot even buy own domain and hosting, why should an advertiser trust the blog?

Obviously the disadvantages outnumbered the advantages. So why waste your time using free blogs?

My recommendation is to have a self-hosted domain if you are really serious in blogging to make money online. You should start RIGHT from the very beginning in order for you to save time and energy. You don’t need to do trial and error because this is already proven by me and other successful bloggers in the industry.

But still, let me show you the disadvantages and advantages of having a paid hosting/ self-hosted blog.

Disadvantages

1. It requires fees. Professional blogs requires two things: domain name and web hosting. Domain name ranges from 7-12USD per year while web hosting costs 6.95USD per month (if you are from the Philippines, just compute it with the current exchange rate). Normally, newbies are hesitant to shell out expenses but like any business you need capital. If you are serious, you need to treat it as an investment.

Advantages:

1. You have full control over your blog. As long as you abide by the rules (you don’t engage in prohibited practices) no one can suspend you blog or website.

2. You have a more professional domain name/URL. For example: You can take ronaldredito.com NOT ronaldredito.wordpress.com

3. You can customize the way you want your blog/website to look. You can install themes of templates which is suited for your blog, product or service. You can install plugins important to drive traffic to your website.

4. You can place any advertising in you blog. (Check my post about my Adsense earnings). You can place different income streams in your blog.

5. You can create your own email. (For example: admin@ronaldredito.com)

6. You can upload more content to your websites such as pdf files, video and audio files, depending on the limit of your hosting account.

7. Using this reliable and quality web host (CLICK HERE), you can host unlimited numbers of domains/websites in one, single account.

Conclusion

If you want to make money blogging, you need to have full control over your domain. You can only do that if you buy your own domain name and reliable web hosting.

Adsense is one of the ways on how to make money blogging in the Philippines. In my previous post, I promised to show you live earnings on my Adsense account.

I have explained before that earning money online could be from different streams such as virtual assistant jobs, article writing, web design, blog maintenance, customer service, transcription, etc.

One might be skeptical that this is just a product of Photoshop. Oh, well, that’s just normal.

More than 2 years ago, I was just like that. I never believed that making money through blogging could be possible in the Philippines. But my curiosity drove me to research ways on how to duplicate the success of others.

Last month, my girlfriend and I had the chance to visit Vietnam and Cambodia for one week. Four days were spent in Cambodia visiting the famous temples while the rest in Vietnam.

We took the half-day Cu Chi Tunnels Tours for 4USD each. The said tunnels are sophisticated underground community made up of 250 km of tunnels and chambers below the city. Cu Chi is about 40 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City.

We were lucky to have Jacky, our tour guide who was a 60 year old war veteran. He said he had fought against the VietCong (Vietnamese Communists). He was a collaborator with the Americans. He shared that he was sent to Chicago as a reward. He was proud how their country had progressed rapidly despite the damages of the war. (Currency rate when we were there was: 20,000 VND = 1 USD )

At the Cu Chi Tunnels, we learned about the creativity and ingenuity of the Cu Chi people. We saw how Vietnamese survived even their places were bombed and completely destroyed. Some people lived underground (literally) for almost 20 years.

Visitors could see how the people made weapons and booby traps to counter the American forces. You can enter the tunnels up to 10 meters below the ground.

The Củ Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong’s base of operations for the Tết Offensive in 1968.

The tunnels were used by Viet Cong guerrillas as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous guerrilla fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces, through which they secured American withdrawal from Vietnam and ultimate military success.”

One awesome attraction at Cu Chi Tunnels is the firing range wherein you can try shooting with different weapons such as M60 machine gun, AK-47, M16, Garand, and K 54. Bullet costs 1USD -1.75USD depending on the gun.

So we tried the AK 47 (because I want to know how Osama Bin Laden felt – lol). Here’s our video! Enjoy! =)

Wish I had also fired the M60 machine gun, too bad the ammos were expensive! But we had a great time there!

And this were made possible by earning money online. I was blessed to break away from the chains of corporate slavery at an early age. =)

The answer is definitely, YES! Earning money online is possible in the Philippines and I’ve been doing it since 2007. There are a number of ways an individual can do to make alternative income on the internet.

My online income streams were varied. I have experiences in the following:

1. Online research (bids and solicitations, news research, US clients)
2. Search engine results evaluator (US client)
3. Virtual assistant (US, UK and Australian clients)
4. Article writing (US, UK and Australian clients)
5. WordPress blog design and maintenance (US, UK and Australian clients)
6. Social media accounts maintenance (US and UK clients)
7. Customer service/technical support (US Clients)

These above-mentioned tasks are home based yet I still have an employer. I have a specific number of hours required and a quota to reach every single day. And my salary is fixed. The good side is I could cut my travel and food expenses. I even work with just my boxer shorts on.

After 2 years working in this set-up, I grew tired of the routine. I don’t have control of my time. When I travel I always bring my weighty Toshiba laptop since I still have to log-in online in order to finish my employer’s assignments. So I searched the web for alternative ways to make money online.

Fortunately, I discovered blogging through a video uploaded on Youtube featuring successful Filipino bloggers on GMA 7’s Mel and Joey. That video changed my perspective. I was so inspired that I immediately implemented what I learned on July 2009. Here’s that exact video:

It has been more than a month since my last post in here. Let’s just say I’m enjoying my life and staying away from the laptop for a while. There’s an automated income which I’ve successfully set up so no problem in my end. I just check my earnings every now and then.
