Google’s Gmail Free SMS to Globe, Sun and Smart

Google announced Friday that it has launched Gmail-to-SMS, a free service wherein Filipinos can send and receive text messages from Gmail to Globe, Smart, and Sun subscribers. It’s a great way to send free text to the Philippines for someone based overseas.

I’ve been cutting expenses on mobile prepaid loads lately so this is good news for me and for those staying online most of the time. This is a good alternative for Chikka.com which does not support a number of carriers especially those with new access numbers.

Here’s how to send free SMS text messages to any Globe, Smart or Sun prepaid/postpaid mobile users.

1. Login to your Gmail account as usual.
2. Look for “SEND SMS” on left Dashboard.

3. Enter the specific mobile phone number and press enter.
4. Specify Contact Name and click “Save”.

5. Compose your message and press Enter Key.
6. Recipient will receive your message from a special access number like “2662049” with your Gmail email address.

Here are a few reminders:

- Initially, you’re granted a quota of fifty (50) messages. (A quota is an allocation of SMS (text messages) that you’re able to send to a mobile phone.)

- Every time you send a message, your quota decreases by one.

- Every time you receive an SMS message in Chat (for example when a phone user replies to one of your messages) your quota increases by five, up to a maximum of 50.

- If your quota goes down to zero at any point, it will increase back up to one 24 hours later. So, you won’t ever be locked out of the system.

What to do if you want higher message quota?

Here’s the trick, if you’d like a higher message quota, you can always send an SMS to your own phone, and then reply to that message multiple times. Every time you send a reply message, your quota is increased by five. Effectively, you’re buying more messages by paying your phone company for these outgoing messages.

What has social media done for me?

Two words: MAJOR EXPOSURE.

I’m a singer/songwriter and creative entrepreneur from Vancouver, Canada, so I use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to promote both my music and business blog site, Essetino Connexions. This has built a tremendous amount of exposure that I wouldn’t have been able to get in the physical world for free or even in such a short amount of time. Exposing my talent and brand online allows me to reach international markets and grow my fan base.

EVERY artist should have their own website and use social media to promote themselves – this is the 21st century way of marketing any person, business, product, service, you name it. Social media even allows me to meet great people across the world, like Ronald; I really would not be writing this blog article right now if it wasn’t for Twitter!

Here’s a brief look at how I’ve been using social media and the results its outputted. Keep in mind that both of these lists are just a taste of what social media has done for me – the full list was too extensive and would keep you in your seat for way too long!

A Facebook Fan Page – has my music, videos, photos, biography, inspirations and social media links

Twitter Account – I Tweet everyday on topics like my singing performances, blog articles, inspirational
quotes, tools and tips for bloggers, artists, performers or social media lovers, etc.

Communicate – comment on other people’s Tweets and Facebook statuses or walls.

YouTube channel – has “AuretTV” episodes of my past performances.

Create Facebook events for my performances and other gatherings

Why it matters:

- Establishes my credibility
- Sells copies of my album and digital copies of the songs on outlets like iTunes and Amazon
- Sells tickets to my shows
- Significantly increases my followers on Twitter
- Significantly increases my fans on Facebook
- Significantly increases traffic to all my other sites
- Attracts new opportunities

How to Save Photos on Friendster Without Using the Exporter App

I’ve heard that the once popular social networking, Friendster, was about to do a makeover of their website and announced that they will be deleting current contents like Photos, blogs, etc. to free up their space. I don’t know their future plans but I hope it would be for the better in order to keep up with the ever changing social media landscape.

As soon as I’ve learned about their plans, I saved all my Photo Albums in my laptop’s hard drive and made a back-up in my Seagate Portable hard Drive.

Friendster offered a quick solution on how to save important files through their Exporter App, however, I received a number of feedback that the zip file does not work. Or it is taking too long to download.

As per request of a Twitter contact, here’s a quick way to save your photos on Friendster without losing the original size of your precious images/memorabilia.

How to Save Friendster Photos (Pictures)

1. Open www.friendster.com using Mozilla Firefox (Note that this tip will only work on Mozilla Firefox browser)

2. Enter your email and password as usual.
3. Click on Photos on top.

4. Click on the specific album that you want to save. In this example “PS Adik”

5. Browse each photo on the entire Album.
6. Once all photos are browsed in the album, Click “TOOLS” then “PAGE INFO”.

7. Click MEDIA.

8. Select all files starting with http://photos-p.friendster.com/ . Make sure the type of file is “IMAGE”

9. Once all files are selected, Click on “SAVE AS” and specify the specific Folder on your Laptop/desktop you want your photos to be saved.
10. Repeat the steps in all your Photo Albums.

A number of people say running is the best cardio exercise for sustained and permanent weight loss program. I really need to lose extra pounds accumulated because of too much working as a blogger and virtual assistant.

Unknown to many, majority of homebased freelancers share the same predicament –we are gaining too much weight because we usually spend our time sitting doing our writing and other assignments in front of our laptops or desktops. Some don’t understand that we also have deadlines to meet. The only difference and advantage is that we can work at home which translates to less transportation and meal costs. However, we still work and it eats up our time.

An Overweight Freelancer

I now weigh 76 kilos and I know it’s bad for my health. I started running a few months back but decided to stop because of the crazy rainy weather. I have also given my old worn out running shoes to my friend here in Bicol. So I’m left with a single pair of old model shoes. Having a new and effective running shoes would be a great motivation. Susan is famous for her role in Mara Clara, a Filipino primetime television drama that was aired by ABS-CBN from August 17, 1992 to February 14, 1997. Currently, a remake is airing at the same TV station with Mylene Dizon playing her role.

How to View Facebook Photos the Old Way

Recently, Facebook made a few changes on how you view photos. Did you notice that black background and somewhat floating effect when you click your photos?

Do you get annoyed with this new update? I am really pissed. I believe it just made the layout too cluttered. I know changes are needed in any system but I don’t agree that the recent change made any improvement. People like me are just pissed. =)

But good thing, I found out there are ways on how to revert back to the old photo viewing experience. Here are 2 methods:

1. Press Refresh button or F5 button

The Old Style of browsing photos will be activated when you click F5 on your keyboard or refresh button on your browser.

2. Manually remove “&theater” at the end of URL.

Current Facebook photo will give you a URL like this:

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=105360362843163&set=a.135097089869490.22160.105360076176525&theater

Just Remove &theater at the end and hit Enter on your Keyboard.

You will then be reverted to the old style.

Try it out!

Batang Lagim video is circulating on the net through the popular video site, Youtube. The said video features a dance group composed of young kids performing at the dances finals in San Andres Bukid, Manila.

This caught my attention from the most active political fan page on Facebook. The poster said it was about “pure determination” so I’ve decided to check it out. Currently, the said video has more than 60,000 views and continuously rising.

Beary Frierson is Dead

Last Monday, I left my house to watch the Sorcerer’s Apprentice starring Nicolas Cage at A. Bichara Silverscreen but Beary Frierson was acting strange when I was back.

Beary did not greet me as he usually does. He did not accompany me to the stairs and did not insist to enter the sala.

The next morning was even weird. Beary was shy to mingle with Amanda, his best friend. They were the closest buddies that I’ve known. Beary was then afraid of people and skipped all his meals. He took shelter in the piles of coco lumber stocked beside the house or the drainage area at the back.

Now, Beary Frierson is Dead. I suspect that he was poisoned when I was away. Some say he was tricked to eat something with “vetsin” or monosodium glutamate (MSG) due to the symptoms that he has shown. Others say he was hit or had eaten “Mindoro frog” which is poisonous.

I’m not really sure what happened.

I miss him now and my family will miss him more in the coming days. Although he was fond of biting and destroying slippers (more or less he destroyed a dozen pairs), we love him a lot. He was a great guard at a very young age. We are still coping from a death of a pet!

Jessi Slaughter or Jessica Leonhardt in real life is an 11 year old kid who became a top trending on searches because of her videos on Youtube with username kerligirl13.

So what’s so special about this kid?

Jessi had so many haters because of her “bad-mouthing” videos unusual for her age. According to Buzzy Times, “she is/was some camwhore drama-junkie, typically posting shit that most /b/tards couldn’t be bothered with.”

When Kerligirl13 was trending, the term was reportedly picked up on Fox News and has been making heat waves.

I tried to look for her channel on Youtube but unfortunately, the account http://www.youtube.com/user/kerligirl13 is already closed. I haven’t actually seen the videos but hopefully some users (or haters) have downloaded the videos and will be posted in the future. =)

The last video circulating on the net was titled “You dun goofed up” which has now more than 500,000 views (as of writing). She was crying and telling people to not be so mean, especially people on tumblr. It’s mostly funny because her father goes on a rant telling everyone on Tumblr and Youtube that they are gonna get arrested and that ‘yah done goofed’ and we all got reported to the state police and the cyber police.

Google TV is the latest product of the world’s number one search engine and website, Google and its partners (Intel, Sony and Logitech). It was officially announced on May 20, 2010. Developers have said that this would redefine the television experience of the users and viewers.

Well, do you think this would be a hit? Do you think the Google TV set will be affordable?

Take the case on the Philippines, only a few has plasma or LCD TV to-date because of the hefty price. The LCD TV prices had relatively gone down but still it is expensive.

But the good thing is, Filipinos are now trying to be updated with technology. Families are now buying personal computers, laptops or notebook computers and broadband and DSL subscription rates are now cheaper.

Google TV might have a great market in the first world countries but not yet in a country like the Philippines.

By the way, how soon will it reach the Philippines? And how much will it cost? I should get one. Just kidding.
