If you are still using Friendster, you might have noticed a big difference in their web layout. I believe this took effect just today, December 4, 2009 because I accessed the site yesterday to check on some updates from friends and online connections and they had their old page.
Here’s the new look:
Well, this is a good move but too late.
Facebook has really beaten them big time!
Friendster was the first social media/ online social networking site which caught the country in the early 2002 but their ranking continued to drop. Friendster has over 115 million registered users and over 61 million unique visitors per month globally but still not enough to compete with Facebook which popularity started only in the late 2004. To date, Facebook has 350 million users worldwide.
Friendster is now ranked 139th worldwide.
Facebook is now on the second spot next to Google. But I believe it is possible that it could get the top spot because of the numerous applications and games like Café World, Mafia Wars, Farmville, Fishville, etc. Time spent playing these games contribute to its ranking. The more time visitors spend on a site is one factor that determines the site popularity and ranking. Currently, the average time spent per visitor is 1852.5 minutes (within 3 months range) which is higher than Google.
Here are the top 11 sites worldwide:
1. Google
Enables users to search the Web, Usenet, and images. Features include PageRank, caching and translation of results, and an option to find similar pages. The company’s focus is developing search technology.
2. Facebook
A social utility that connects people, to keep up with friends, upload photos, share links and videos.
3. Yahoo!
Personalized content and search options. Chatrooms, free e-mail, clubs, and pager.
4. YouTube
YouTube is a way to get your videos to the people who matter to you. Upload, tag and share your videos worldwide!
5. Windows Live
Search engine from Microsoft.
6. Wikipedia
An online collaborative encyclopedia.
7. Blogger.com
blogger.com
Free, automated weblog publishing tool that sends updates to a site via FTP.
8. Baidu.com
Music search engine and free MP3 & video streaming for all kind of topic.
9. Microsoft Network (MSN)
Dialup access and content provider.
10. Yahoo!Japan
What’s surprising is the number 11 spot. This is totally unexpected!
