Jesse Robredo, the multi-awarded mayor of Naga City has been shortlisted for the 2010 World Mayor Prize. We are calling all Filipino readers of this blog to support our very own.
Robredo is one of Bicol’s pride. He could have won a senate seat if he had decided to run in the recent national elections.
His achievements in office include most recently:
Most Cost-Effective City in Asia by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Direct Investment Magazine (2005);
Public Service Awardee for Local e-Governance from the United Nations Department of Public Administration and Finance (2004);
Women-Friendly City Award from the UN-Habitat and the UN Development Fund for Women (2004);
Model City for Government Procurement from the World Bank and Procurement Watch (2003);
CyberCity Awardee for its i-Governance initiatives from the United Nations Development Program (2002);
Dubai International Awardee for Improving the Living Environment from UN Habitat (1998).
Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (1996), and;
Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines.
He also received the Konrad Adenauer Medal of Excellence as Most Outstanding City Mayor of the Philippines (1998) and the first ever “Dangal ng Bayan” Award of the Civil Service Commission.
In 2000, he became the Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Government Service.
Robredo is also a member of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity.

During the first round of World Mayor 2010, held in late 2009 and early 2010, more than 118,000 citizens from around the world nominated some 840 mayors for this year’s World Mayor title. Based on the number and quality of nominations, the editorial board of City Mayors, the organisers of the contest, selected 25 mayors from across the world to proceed to the final round. Luckily, Jesse Robredo is one of them.
In 2006, Jejomar Binay, former Makati City mayor and the current vice-president ranked 4th. (http://www.worldmayor.com/results06/wm_winners06.html)
I had the chance to meet Robredo last year at a forum in Legazpi City. Here’s a souvenir.
