As a homebased freelancer doing some affiliate marketing, blogging, search engine optimization (SEO) and social media marketing (SMM) tasks for US and UK clients, one of the major concerns is how to get paid for my services while here in the Philippines.

Three years ago, I had no idea about this money transfer service because we don’t have relatives abroad sending remittances. But with the nature of my job, I became knowledgeable about numerous ways on how to send money to the Philippines.

This is not exclusive to online workers (like me) only, this would also apply to those people wanting to send money for their employees, homebased workers, relatives, business partners, associates, virtual assistants, girlfriends, etc.

The number one and the most convenient choice of employers is Xoom Money Transfer. Why? Because they have the lowest transaction fee (only 4.99USD) for amounts as high as 2,999USD. Xoom is the cheapest in its market. You can see the comparison in their matrix.

Xoom vs Western Union

Important note however, that 4.99USD transaction fee is ONLY APPLICABLE if you pay through a US Bank Account. If you use credit cards, transaction fees are relatively higher.

There is also a new policy that minimum SEND AMOUNTS should be 50USD. To learn their reason visit: http://blog.xoom.com/2010/03/new-minimum-send-amounts-payment-source.html

Although there are new policies, my employer and I are still using Xoom’s money transfer service. Convenience is the number one factor.

Money can be received in 3 convenient ways, you can choose from:

1. Cash Pickup – Pick up money in just minutes at M. Lhuillier locations, including many that are open 24×7, SM Malls, Cebuana Lhuillier, Banco de Oro (BDO), many rural banks and Globe GCASH REMIT including Globe Telecom centers, Villarica and Tambunting Pawnshops. My favorite is M. Lhuillier – I pick up payment at LCC Polangui branch or Ligao branch. Check out the branch nearest you. Click HERE

2. Bank Deposit – Fast deposits to any bank account in the Philippines. Deposits in minutes to Philippine National Bank (PNB) and Banco de Oro (BDO). and deposits in just a few hours to Metrobank, and Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI).

3. Door-to-Door Delivery- Rush delivery in 6 hours or less to Metro Manila at no extra cost! Fast delivery within 1 to 2 days to most other provinces.

Xoom is still the best way to send money to the Philippines especially those who do not have a bank account. Unlike Paypal, one could claim the money by just presenting a valid identification card with photo and of course the Xoom Transaction Number and relevant information.

You would need to use the info on the acknowledgment receipt sent to both the sender and the receiver which looks like this.

As proof of being an avid user of Xoom remittance through M. Lhuillier here are photos of receipts and my M Lhuillier Card with some employer’s payment.
